The Refuge that once was known as “the Vivalda barracks” was built during the ’30s to shelter those soldiers in charge of controlling the strongholds of the “Vallo Alpino” line which were located nearby.
The Refuge was opened in 1982, and was run by the Mountain Guide Nino Perino. From then on Campo Base has always been a very important base for climbers challenged by the routes of the Castello-Provenzale and for both Italian and foreigner hikers.
At the end of the ’90s the building was expanded by adding the right wing, which contains the rooms actually. In summer 2010, Maira SpA started running Campo Base, by creating the Campo Base srl company.
Campo Base has now rooms with 4 or 8 beds available, and a wide camping area, supplied with electric energy connections.
